Announcement: Dr. Brent Lanting named inaugural Wolfe Chair in Orthopaedic Research and Innovation

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Brent Lanting has been appointed as the inaugural Wolfe Chair in Orthopaedic Research and Innovation at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2031.
Dr. Lanting joined the Department of Surgery at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry as an assistant professor in September 2012. He grew up in Strathroy, Ont., and completed his post-secondary education at Western. Originally set on studying Mechanical Engineering, his interest in orthopaedic surgery was piqued while working in the biomechanics lab with Drs. Graham King and James Johnson. He became the first graduate of the Concurrent Degree Program for Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Medicine. He has a Master of Science degree in Medical Biophysics.
After completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at Western, Dr. Lanting headed stateside to Charlotte, N.C., for a fellowship in total joint reconstructive surgery. Current research interests include enhanced recovery after hip and knee replacements, physiologic knee replacements and tribology and biomechanics.
Dr. Lanting currently serves as the Graduate Chair/Program Director in the Department of Surgery. He has published 259 peer reviewed papers with the majority occurring in the last ten years and 35 publications in 2024 alone. He believes this productivity has both been a reflection of a curiosity and a desire to make a difference by contributing to the existing body of knowledge, as well as a desire to mentor trainees in their journey.
As the inaugural Wolfe Chair in Orthopaedic Research and Innovation, Dr. Lanting looks forward to growing as a thought leader and building on Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and Western’s history of excellence.
