I am pleased to announce that Dr. Amit Garg has been re-appointed as the Associate Dean, Clinical Research, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2031.

Dr. Garg completed his medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1995. In 1998, he completed his Masters of Arts in Education at the University of Toronto, and in 2005, he completed his PhD at McMaster University in Health Research Methodology in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at McMaster University, followed by a Nephrology fellowship at Western University.

Since 2011, Dr. Garg has been a Professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He is an internationally recognized nephrologist and clinician-scientist. In 2014, he was the recipient of the ASN-AHA Donald W. Seldin Young Investigator Award and Address, American Society of Nephrology (ASN). In 2014, he was awarded the Dean’s Award of Research Excellence. In 2015, he received the Dr. Joseph Gilbert Research Contribution of the Year Lawson Impact Award, as well as the U.S. National Kidney Foundation International Distinguished Medal. In 2021, he received the Hellmuth Prize, Western’s highest distinction for sustained excellence in research, and the Kidney Foundation of Canada Medal of Research Excellence.

Working in collaborative teams that include learners, Dr. Garg grounds his research in clinical practice. His work has had a substantial impact on the safety and practice of living kidney donation, the prevention of perioperative acute kidney injury and the improvement of scientific information retrieval. His research on unsafe drug prescribing has also contributed to labelling changes by Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He has authored more than 800 papers, published with more than 1,000 collaborators and has an h-index of 136.

Dr. Garg brings considerable experience with the CIHR grant process, both as a successful applicant and as a peer reviewer. Over the past 25 years, he has served on several CIHR review panels and secured nearly 30 CIHR grants as nominated principal investigator through clinical, health services and population health panels, representing $36 million in funding. He has also contributed as a co-principal investigator or co-investigator on additional CIHR grants totaling $87 million.

As the inaugural Associate Dean, Clinical Research, Dr. Garg has strengthened Western’s clinical trials profile and helped secure more than $7.2 million in new CIHR grant funding to advance clinical trials, capacity building and training programs. During Dr. Garg’s first term, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry launched a multidisciplinary national clinical trials leadership program, developed clinical trials curriculum and expanded its capacity to conduct first-in-human studies. His contributions to the Accelerating Clinical Trials Canada initiative have also helped position our community for sustained success in investigator-led trial funding and execution.

A strong advocate for clinical and translational research, Dr. Garg has also supported Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s Clinical Research Training Programs, which create a research-rich environment for learners and early-career faculty. Through the MD/PhD Program, Resident Research Career Development Program and Clinician Investigator Program, participants are able to pursue opportunities ranging from summer research projects to advanced graduate studies, helping cultivate the next generation of physician researchers dedicated to improving patient care through scientific discovery.

Looking forward, Dr. Garg aims to continue building clinical research capacity by supporting the development of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s trainees, faculty and leaders, while strengthening partnerships across the University, with hospital partners and the broader community.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Garg on his re-appointment.
