Announcement: Silvia Penuela, PhD, appointed Assistant Dean, Translational Research
From the Office of the Dean
I am pleased to announce that Silvia Penuela, PhD, has been appointed as the Assistant Dean, Translational Research at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2030.
Dr. Penuela completed a PhD at the University of Minnesota, followed by postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota and Western University. Dr. Penuela started her research program in 2014 and is funded by CIHR and NSERC grants. She is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair -Research in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, cross-appointed to the Department of Oncology -Division of Experimental Oncology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.
Dr. Penuela has received numerous academic and research honours, including the Faculty Scholar Award (2025), Excellence in Academic and Teaching Award (2023), the Dean’s Award of Excellence – Junior Faculty (2020), and the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award (2020), all from Western University.
She currently serves as a member of the International Affairs Committee of the American Society for Cell Biology. At Western University, she is the Founder and Chair of the B7 Group, which brings together Associate Chairs of Research from the seven Basic Science departments within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. She also serves on the Management Committee for the Centre for Translational Cancer Research (CTCR) at London Health Sciences Centre.
Dr. Penuela recognizes the value of open communication, collaboration, and the coordinated use of efforts and resources among basic and clinical experts within a diverse team. She is committed to further strengthening these relationships to enhance the synergy between basic and translational research as a faculty-wide initiative at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
