Announcement: Dr. Susanne Schmid re-appointed Vice Dean, Basic Medical Sciences
From the Office of the Dean
I am pleased to announce that Susanne Schmid, PhD, has been re-appointed as the Vice Dean, Basic Medical Sciences, at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2030.
Dr. Schmid earned a degree in biology from the University of Tübingen in Germany in 1993 and a PhD in animal physiology in 1997. She joined Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 2007.
Dr. Schmid is an internationally recognized biomedical researcher and academic leader. Her research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying sensory filtering and its impact on higher cognitive processes in normal and disease states. Her research has been funded by NSERC, CIHR, and many different institutions and foundations. Dr. Schmid participates on numerous grant review committees, including CIHR and NSERC. She is also active in a number of professional societies, Faculty and University committees, including serving as an elected senator at Western.
Dr. Schmid has taught in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year Bachelor of Medical Sciences program, as well as in the undergraduate and graduate Neuroscience programs. As a supervisor, she has mentored and graduated a long list of very successful Masters and PhD students, many of which have become faculty members themselves or gone on to pursue careers in the public or private sector.
During her first term, Vice Dean, Dr. Schmid oversaw promotion and tenure, workload, and performance evaluation for the School’s Basic Science departments. She has been responsible for overseeing the undergraduate BMSc and Neuroscience programs, along with a portfolio of more than 20 research and course-based graduate programs. Dr. Schmid has led several important initiatives at Schulich while working closely with department chairs and program directors on fostering a culture of collaboration in both research and teaching.
