Announcement: Lauren Flynn, PhD, appointed Chair, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology

I am pleased to announce that Lauren Flynn, PhD, has been appointed as Chair, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2030.
Dr. Flynn received her PhD from the University of Toronto in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry and the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering in 2007, and subsequently initiated her career as an Assistant Professor at Queen’s University. In 2014, she joined the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry as an Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, through a joint appointment with the Department of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, where she was promoted to Full Professor in 2020.
Dr. Flynn has received many awards which include membership in the Royal Society of Canada’s (RSC) College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, the Western Faculty Scholar Award, and the Dean’s Award of Excellence - Research.
Her research team is focused on developing cell-based regenerative therapies incorporating bioscaffolds derived from the extracellular matrix (ECM) for applications in soft connective tissue regeneration, wound healing, and therapeutic angiogenesis. Her interdisciplinary research program involves numerous collaborations with biologists, imaging scientists, engineers, and clinicians, and is currently supported by funding from the CIHR, NSERC, and Stem Cell Network.
Dr. Flynn looks forward to continuing to promote a culture of inclusiveness, transparency, and consensus-building. As Chair, her vision is to strengthen existing networks within the Department and build new bridges that support interdisciplinary research and teaching efforts across the basic science and clinical departments at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, as well as with other faculties and institutes at Western University, our affiliated hospitals, and beyond.
