In Memoriam: Dr. David Spence
Office of the Dean
With sadness, we share the passing of Dr. David Spence on August 10, 2025 at the age of 80.
Dave was a world-renowned neurologist and researcher, and a professor at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. He was the founder of the Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre based at Robarts Research Institute.
He is best known for pioneering the use of ultrasound technology for predicting cardiovascular risk, identifying new causes of atherosclerosis, measuring effects of therapy, and treating arteries to prevent strokes and heart attacks.
Throughout his career, Dave treated over 40,000 patients and authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications.
In 2019, he was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his significant contributions.
Dave had a passion for his work, often starting his works days at 4 a.m., and he continued his research until the end of his life.
Born in Talara, Peru, Dave moved to Canada to attend Ridley College in St. Catherines, Ontario. He then moved to London to attend Western where he completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1965 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1970. It was also at Western where he met his wife, Ann.
While Dave took great pride in his work, there was nothing that brought him more joy than his family. Always ready with a story or a song, Dave loved nothing more than being surrounded by those he loved.
Dave will be remembered for his groundbreaking work and brilliant mind, but also for his disarming wit, heartfelt hugs and his subtle smile.
