I am pleased to announce that Dr. Wael Haddara, Chair/Department Head of the Department of Medicine, has been appointed the Richard Ivey Chair of Medicine.

Dr. Haddara is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Medicine at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and a critical care physician at LHSC and St Joseph’s. He is a medical educator with a research focus on constructions of medical professional identity, especially as they intersect with modernity and postmodernity.

Dr. Haddara has an evolving interest in character and leadership, drawing on the Ivey Business School Leader Character framework.

His clinical and other research interests include modelling the impact of COVID-19 on hospital and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) resources, leveraging remote/virtual ICU technology to expand capacity and facilitating post-pandemic procedural backlog recovery. Over the past 2 years he has been Acting Director of the Centre for Quality, Innovation and Safety (CQUINS) where he has been helping to advance education in and implementation of Quality Improvement and Innovation in the clinical setting.

Prior to his career in medicine, Dr. Haddara trained and worked as a pharmacist. He continues to be registered with the Ontario College of Pharmacists. Dr. Haddara obtained his MD degree from Queen’s University and completed fellowships in Endocrinology & Metabolism and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Haddara also has a Masters degree in Medical Education from Dundee University, U.K.

We look forward to the continued leadership and excellence he will bring to this role.

Please join me in celebrating Dr. Haddara on his appointment as the Richard Ivey Chair of Medicine.

Sincerely,

John Yoo, MD, FRCS(C), FACS
