I am pleased to announce that Dr. Geoffrey Pickering has been re-appointed as the Neil McKenzie Chair in Cardiac Care in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2030.

The Neil McKenzie Chair leads a cardiovascular research program, integrated with education and care, with the goal of improving outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Pickering earned his MD at Queen's University and received fellowship certification in Internal Medicine and Cardiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He then earned a PhD in Medical Biophysics at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He subsequently undertook post-doctoral training in vascular biology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, and assumed a faculty position at that institution.

Dr. Pickering is currently a Professor at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and appointed in the Departments of Medicine, Medical Biophysics and Biochemistry. He also serves as the Director of the Molecular Medicine Research Laboratories at Robarts Research Institute and the Director of the Molecular Pathology and Spatial Genomics Core Facility at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.

Dr. Pickering’s research is internationally recognized in the field of vascular cell biology and blood vessel restructuring. His research group has discovered novel genes and pathways that regulate vascular function in health and disease, with implications for vascular aging, vascular regeneration and the prevention of heart attacks and aortic catastrophes.

Dr. Pickering has held continuous grant support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research since joining Western in 1993. He is also the recipient of several major awards and honours. He was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2018 and has received the Hypertension Canada Senior Investigator Award and the Research Achievement Award from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Pickering on his re-appointment.
