Evaluation & Assessment

Assessment and evaluation are an important aspect of the Department of Medicine, not only for tracking Resident performance and progress, but also for program development and accreditation through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Completing assessments and evaluations in a timely manner is of utmost importance in order to produce semi-annual and annual progress reports as well as distribute program evaluations and faculty assessments. The policy attached below outlines the assessment and evaluation responsibilities for Residents. If you have any questions regarding this document, or specific evaluations, please contact the DoM educaiton office at domevaluation@lhsc.on.ca

Please ensure you are completing all evaluations on One45 in a timely manner. This includes completing outstanding evaluations as well as reviewing evaluations so they can be added to your file.

OSCE Information

Please review the important information in these documents in preparation for the OSCE Exam.

NEJM Knowledge+ Exam

  • The ABIM has been replaced by the NEJM Knowledge+ exam for the 2016-2017 academic year.
  • Dr. Kane has designated two of your Academic Half Days to the NEJM exam. The first date is expected to be October 6th. A second date will be added to the spring calendar. These half days will give you protected time to complete the mandatory exams.
  • It will be mandatory that each of you complete 2 exams per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. These exams are only 2 hrs each and can be scheduled in your own time. These exams will provide much better feedback.
  • We will be reviewing the results at each semi-annual review so please have these done prior to your PD meeting. We recognize that some residents will not have the opportunity to complete the NEJM before their meeting.
  • It is an adaptive learning program, it will only work for you if you plug away at the program consistently.

Direct Observations

Direct Observation is an important part of Resident learning and also the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Accreditation. This process is meant to document Direct Observations as well as provide Residents with an opportunity to receive immediate feedback from Senior Residents, Fellows or Consultants based on various types of interactions with Patients.
