    Andrei Zaharia presents at the CDA/Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Program

    Andrei Zaharia (DDS 2019), represented Schulich Dentistry at the 2018 CDA/Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Program which took place during the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Convention in Charlottetown, PEI. Zaharia (supervised by Dr. Amin Rizkalla), was awarded this opportunity during Schulich Dentistry’s Annual Research Day by placing in the top 3 poster presentations. (Read full entry)

    Schulich Medicine & Dentistry collaborative research group successful in competition

    Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) awarded a Schulich Medicine & Dentistry research group with a Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) operating grant for their project entitled, ‘Novel technologies for engineering closure of non-healing skin wounds’. This multi-disciplinary collaborative research team consists of biologists, engineers, imaging specialists, a veterinarian, clinicians, and industrial collaborator. Primary Investigators include Dr. Douglas Hamilton (Dentistry/Anatomy & Cell Biology) and Dr. Amin Rizkalla (Dentistry/Chemical & Biochemical Engineering), along with David Bagley. Bagley is the CEO of Advanced BioMatrix, Inc. in San Diego, where they manufacture & distribute collagen and other quality 3D matrix products, specializing in three dimensional (3D) applications for tissue culture, cell assay, and cell proliferation.  (Read full entry)

    Dental students awarded summer studentships

    Congratulations to Maher Alazzam (DDS 2021) and Kristen Desranleau (DDS 2020), who were successful (along with 9 other DDS Students) in being awarded a 2018 Dentistry Summer Research Studentship. Alazzam and Desranleau will be supervised by Drs. Amin Rizkalla and Doug Hamilton, and carry out their work in the Rizkalla lab. Maher Alazzam will work on a project entitled ‘Novel bioactive covalently bonded hybrid coatings on titanium surfaces', and Kristen Desranleau will work on a project entitled ‘3-D Printed Bioactive Glass-Copolymer Scaffolds for Bone Augmentation'.  (Read full entry)

    Three-dimensional solutions

    Schulich Dentistry researchers are developing novel applications of three-dimensional (3D) printing for use in cranio-facial reconstruction. Amin Rizkalla, PhD, PEng, is the principal investigator and he is working with a team of people, including Yara Hosein, PhD, Drs. Joe Armstrong and Henry Lapointe, as well as David Holdsworth, PhD, to determine how 3D printing can be utilized to develop porous titanium constructs for craniofacial reconstruction.     Andrei Zaharia (DDS 2018), attends Colgate Dental Students' Conference on Research

    Andrei Zaharia travelled to Maryland to present his research at the American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation’s 53nd Annual Colgate Dental Students’ Conference in October 2017. Andrei competed for this travel award at Schulich Dentistry's 2016 Annual Research Day with his poster “Novel bioactive, fast-setting and injectable bone cement for bone augmentation”, supervised by Drs.     Andrei Zaharia - CDA/Dentsply Travel Award

    Congratulations to Andrei Zaharia, DDS 2019 (Rizkalla Lab Summer Research Student), for winning the CDA/Dentsply Travel Award in the Junior Category for his poster presentation at Schulich Dentistry Annual Research Day. Title: Novel Bioactive and Injectable, Co-Polymer-Reinforced Bone Cement for Bone Augmentation. Andrei will represent Schulich Dentistry at the 2018 CDA National Oral Health Conference.     Dental students awarded summer studentships

    Congratulations to Shokoufeh Yaseri (DDS 2020) and Andrei Zaharia (DDS 2019), who were successful (along with 13 other DDS Students) in being awarded a 2017 Dentistry Summer Research Studentship.  Yaseri and Zaharia will both work in the Rizkalla Lab. Shokoufeh Yaseri will work on a project entitled 'Surface functionalization of titanium with bioactive glass to improve osteoblast recruitment at implant surface', and Andrei Zaharia will work on a project entitled 'Novel bioactive, fast-setting and injectable bone cement for bone augmentation - continuation'.   The Dentistry Summer Student Research Program provides an opportunity for students enrolled in the DDS program to contribute to clinical and basic science research being performed in Schulich Dentistry.     Dr. Amin Rizkalla awarded a Collaborative Research Seed Grant (CRSG)

    Congratulations to Dr. Amin Rizkalla (Oral Biology, Schulich Dentistry) for his project entitled '‘Optimization of 3D-Printed Porous Titanium Constructs for Craniofacial Reconstuction’. Co-Investigators include Dr. Henry Lapointe (Schulich Dentistry) and Dr. Yara Hosein (Engineering). Collaborative Research Seed Grants (CRSG) provide recipients with seed funding for the formation and development of new interdisciplinary collaborative research teams. The intent is to promote new collaborations that build on different scientific and scholarly backgrounds, to facilitate breakthroughs in solving research questions in a collaborative manner, and to position the School's researchers to successfully respond to targeted requests for proposals from Tri-Council or other funding agencies. (Read full entry)

    Dr. A. Rizkalla awarded funds from OCE

    Congratulations to Dr. Amin Rizkalla for being awarded an Ontario Center of Excellence Innovation and Productivity Award (in the amount of $20,000) for his project titled, ‘Advanced 3D Metal Additive Manufacturing for Dental Metal Substructures’. These funds are leveraged against contributions from Rotsaert Dental Laboratory Services Inc. in the amounts of $5,000 cash and $25,470 in-kind. In addition, Dr. Rizkalla’s application has been approved for $25,000 from NSERC-Engage, conditional on activation of the OCE award. (Read full entry)
