Bertha Garcia honoured as a YMCA Woman
of Excellence

In recognition of her contributions to science, medicine and education, Dr. Bertha Garcia was honoured with a 2019 YMCA Women of Excellence  Award. Dr. Garcia’s impact as a medical educator, clinical leader and mentor has been profound.


Curriculum Renewal Launched

In September 2019, the incoming Doctor of Medicine class began their studies within a renewed curriculum. The changes to the curriculum support adaptive learning as the foundation to a competency-based medical education model. The goal is to create active learners through deeper integration and early-stage clinical decision making.


A Royal Honour

Renowned Schulich Medicine & Dentistry neuroscientist Adrian Owen, PhD, was named an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire as part of the 2019 New Year’s Honours list recognizing “the achievements of a wide range of extraordinary people” across the United Kingdom.


Twitter’s Resident Women’s Health Expert Goes National

Resident alumna Dr. Jennifer Gunter is an outspoken advocate for women’s health issues and a well-known debunker of ‘junk science.’ After publishing The Vagina Bible, her new web series Jensplaining launched on CBC’s Gem streaming service in August.


Next-level Partnership

Building on established excellence in medical imaging, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and London’s academic teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London, entered into a unique partnership with Canon Medical Systems Canada in advanced computed tomography (CT) that will advance patient care, research and teaching in Southwestern Ontario.


Jane Rylett appointed scientific director of CIHR institute of Aging

Internationally recognized neuroscientist, expert in Alzheimer’s research and alumna Jane Rylett, PhD’80, worked within the Alzheimer’s community for many years and witnessed first-hand the enormous impact that neurodegenerative diseases have on patients and their loved ones.


Enriched training for Dentistry Program

In keeping with the School’s vision to provide an extraordinary scholarly experience that prepares students to be exceptional dental professionals within their communities and on the global stage, the Senate at Western approved changes to the School’s Internationally Trained Dentists (ITD) Program.


ImPaKT Grand Opening

The Imaging Pathogens for Knowledge Translation (ImPaKT) Facility officially began operation this summer. The research facility is unique in North America, housing a cutting-edge suite of imaging equipment within a fully contained CL2+/3 facility.


A decade of dental outreach

This year marked the 10th anniversary for two extraordinary dental outreach programs at the School. Sharing Smiles Day and the Dental Outreach Community Service.


Dr. Spence honoured with the Order of Canada

Dr. David Spence, BA’65, MD’70, was honoured with the Order of Canada on July 1. One of Canada’s highest honours, it recognizes trailblazers who have enriched the lives of others and made a difference to the country.
