See the full Agenda

London Health Research Day is an opportunity to share your research, engage in scientific discussion and learn from your peers and leaders. Showcasing poster presentations from top students and trainees, this is your opportunity to learn about innovative health research conducted across the city of London.

This annual research event will feature the outstanding work from trainees at Western University's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Faculty of Health Sciences, Lawson Research Institute of St. Joseph's Health Care London and London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute.

Francesca Ciccarelli, PhD

Francesca Ciccarelli, PhD

Professor of Cancer Genomics, Queen Mary University of London
Lead, Centre for Cancer Evolution, Barts Cancer Institute
Principal Group Leader, Cancer Systems Biology, The Francis Crick Institute

Francesca Ciccarelli is a Professor of Cancer Genomics at Queen Mary University of London. She leads the Centre for Cancer Evolution at Barts Cancer Institute and is the Principal Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute in London. Francesca graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Bologna and did her PhD at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, where she studied the evolution of genomes using comparative genomics and phylogenetics. In 2005, Francesca started her independent research group at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, pioneering the use of genomics and systems biology to study cancer evolution. Francesca’s multidisciplinary team of biologists, mathematicians, oncologists, engineers, and computer scientists applies genetics, imaging, and theoretical modelling to study cancer evolution in time and space. Francesca co-leads the Cancer Evolution Theme of the CRUK City of London Cancer Centre and her work is supported by Cancer Research UK, the MRC, the European Union and the European Research Council (ERC).

Professional Workshops

This workshop will focus on the unique challenges and opportunities postdocs face when exploring careers beyond academia. Through expert advice and practical strategies, attendees will learn how to identify transferable skills, expand their professional networks, and position themselves for success in a range of non-academic fields.

Workshop 2: Unlocking Career Opportunities Beyond Academia – Presented by Graduate Trainees

UCC, Room 56

This workshop, led by graduate trainees, will explore diverse career opportunities beyond academia and provide insights into navigating the transition successfully. Attendees will gain practical strategies, hear firsthand experiences, and learn how to leverage their skills for roles in industry, government, and other sectors.

Workshop 3: Beyond the Clinic: How to Integrate Research into Your Medical Career

UCC, Room 37

This workshop will explore how medical professionals can integrate research into their clinical practice to enhance patient care and drive innovation. Open to both medical professionals and trainees/students aspiring to enter the field, it will provide insights on securing funding, developing research collaborations, and leveraging evidence-based findings to improve treatment outcomes and advance careers. There will be a 20-minute Q&A session at the end of the presentations for attendees to engage directly with the speakers to gain practical advice.

Workshop 4: CR(EDI)T presents: How to conscientiously incorporate EDID into teaching and research and why it's important

UCC, Room 41

At an institution as large and diverse as Western University, we all have a role to play in embedding Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonization (EDID) principles into teaching and research. This workshop will explore how to create inclusive learning environments, approach research with an equity-focused lens, and understand the broader impact of EDID on academic and scientific advancement.
