Dr. Richard Hilsden is a trauma and acute care surgeon within our division who is also an active member of the Canadian Armed Forces.  Dr. Hilsden completed his medical school training at McMaster university is 2006.  He went on to complete family medicine residency in 2008 and worked as a family physician in military prior to retraining in general surgery. Dr. Hilsden completed is MBA at the Richard Ivey School of business in 2013. He completed his general surgery residency in London in 2016 and completed his trauma surgery fellowship in 2018. Dr. Hilsden has deployed on several military missions, serving tours of duty Afghanistan, Iraq, and West Africa. 

Dr. Hilsden’s research focus is on surgery in extreme and austere environments, point of care ultrasound for general surgery applications, and health systems analysis.  In addition to his trauma and acute care surgery practice, his elective clinical interests include: Minimally invasive and complex abdominal wall reconstruction, biliary disease, and benign/malignant colorectal disease.
