About the program
The Collaborative Specialization in Mental Health and Addictions Research prepares you to work across disciplines and explore mental health and addictions from multiple perspectives—from molecules and cells to clinical care, communities, population health, systems and policy.
You’ll build a broad knowledge base, learn to communicate across disciplinary boundaries and develop the skills to assess how scientific discoveries can influence research, innovation and health care. As a graduate you’ll be prepared to lead collaborative, interdisciplinary research in the mental health and addictions field.

Application requirements
You must first apply to a thesis-based graduate program at Western University in one of the following programs:
- Anatomy and Cell Biology (MSc, PhD)
- Education Studies (MA, PhD)
- Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MSc, PhD)
- Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (MSc, PhD)
- Health Information Science (MHIS, PhD)
- Kinesiology (MA, MSc, PhD)
- Medical Biophysics (MSc, PhD)
- Neuroscience (MSc, PhD)
- Nursing (MScN, PhD)
- Psychology (MSc, PhD)
- Sociology (MA, PhD)
Once admitted to the home graduate program, you can then be considered for the Collaborative Specialization based on the following admission requirements:
- A proposed research-based thesis project that is well aligned with the specialization.
- Supervision by a participating faculty member.
- Permission of the home-department Graduate Chair to participate.
