Graduate Research Trainee Awards of Excellence

 

THE AWARD

The Centre for Translational Cancer Research (CTCR) is honouring the outstanding contributions of its members’ trainees.  This award provides the opportunity to recognize and encourage the ongoing development of outstanding talent amongst the many research trainees in the field of oncology.  One award for a Master’s Candidate and one award for a PhD Candidate may be presented annually.

ELIGIBILITY

Any 2nd year Master’s Candidate or senior PhD Candidate researching in the diverse field of cancer who is supervised by a member of the CTCR may be nominated.

CATEGORIES

  • Nominees should have a substantial record in one or more of the following areas:
    • Community involvement and/or leadership
    • Education/Teaching
    • Leadership
    • Mentorship
    • Research

CRITERIA TO BE MET FOR AWARD

Community involvement and/or leadership: Candidate is a well-rounded individual who is involved and/or gives back to the educational community, the city community or their peers by means of volunteering, participating, leading, teaching or mentoring.

Education/Teaching: Consistent record of high achievement in education as demonstrated by high student ratings and leadership in educational development at the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education levels. May have presented at top industry conferences.

Leadership: Developing a reputation as a leader amongst their peers either in the classroom or laboratory, and perhaps the London cancer community, London community and depending on the candidate’s seniority, the greater cancer community.

Mentorship: Demonstrated a leadership role in a laboratory setting and has been recognized for having excellent personal performance within same setting. The recipient will have developed a reputation as a role model and mentor to other trainees.

Research: Conducting ongoing research aiding in the progression of achieving their master’s or PhD designation. May have been published as a first author and may have been successful in being awarded a grant as first author or co-author.

NOMINATION PROCESS

PROCEDURE

 

  • Candidates may be nominated by their supervisors, peers, members of the community, etc.  Emphasis will be on nominations received from trainee supervisor(s) or peers
  • A complete nomination package will include the following component:
    • A paragraph/1 page stating the name of the nominee with examples of the nominee’s excellence in the areas of consideration. Emphasis will be given to candidates who excel in multiple areas. 
    • Nominations are due May 1, 2026 by 4:00 pm

CANDIDATE’S ROLE

  • Committee to notify candidate of nomination
  • Candidate to accept nomination(s) by way of forwarding current CV, and two letters of support; one of which must be from a/their current supervisor. One page letter from nomination can also count towards letters of support.
  • Nominees to be notified immediately
  • Packages Due May 15, 2026 4pm (no exceptions) 

CTCR AWARDS COMMITTEE

  • Committee to meet during the week of May 18, 2026.
  • Director to present all nominations received to the committee
  • Awards Committee to be comprised of Director and two members of the management committee. Additional members may be added if conflict of interest exists.
  • Each awardee receives $500CDN (by way of Western University cheque) and a trophy
  • Announcement to be made at the annual Oncology Research & Education Day

  • Nominations are due May 1, 2026 by 4:00 pm.
  • Nominees to be notified immediately
  • Packages Due May 15, 2026 4pm (no exception)
  • Committee to meet week of May 18, 2026
