Anti-inflammatory Diet / Intermittent Fasting

Our lab is investigating nutrition-based strategies to reduce inflammation and improve symptoms of depression and chronic pain in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). In a prior clinical trial, we demonstrated that a 3-month anti-inflammatory diet, featuring targeted foods and supplements with anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving properties, significantly reduced inflammatory markers, depressive symptoms, and neuropathic pain.

Despite these promising results, long-term adherence to the diet was a major challenge. Participants reported barriers including high costs, time-intensive shopping and meal prep, and limited social support, highlighting the need for simpler, more sustainable lifestyle interventions.

Intermittent fasting has emerged as a promising alternative, with evidence suggesting it may lower inflammation and improve mood. Our lab is now leading the first clinical trial to examine whether intermittent fasting, supported by a custom smartphone app (THINKFast), can reduce inflammation and depressive symptoms in individuals with SCI. By combining behavioral support with a low-burden nutritional strategy, we aim to develop scalable interventions that promote long-term health and emotional well-being after SCI.
