Joy MacDermid, MSc'92, PhD'99, has been named to the Order of Ontario. She is a founding member of the Canadian Institute of Public Safety Research and has attracted a new generation of surgeons and scientists, elevating the voices of women in fields where they had long been absent.

Fred Possmayer, PhD’65, has been named to the Order of Ontario. Possmayer’s laboratory’s development of the Bovine Lung Extract Surfactant (BLES) to treat Respiratory Distress Syndrome in newborn children has significantly decreased neonatal morbidity. BLES is now a standard treatment around the world, saving thousands of premature newborns.

Dr. Francine Lemire, current MCISc student, has been named to the Order of Canada for her accomplishments as a Paralympic cross-country skiing medalist and exemplary leadership in family medicine. For the past two decades, she has been involved with the College of Family Physicians of Canada, most recently as the executive director and CEO, shaping the delivery of family medicine on a “pan-Canadian scale.” Dr. Lemire is also a Paralympic medalist who came in fourth in cross-country skiing in the 1984 games and won two gold medals at the 1988 Paralympic Winter Games in Austria

Dr. Aamer Somani, MD’20, has joined the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) as a hospitalist and doctor. Dr. Somani completed his MD at Western University in 2020 and came to CKHA in July 2020 as a family medicine resident.

Dr. Vladislav Shustov, DDS’99, was appointed Justice of the Peace in Newmarket. He was a dental clinical instructor at the Toronto College of Dental Hygiene and Auxiliaries since 2017 and prior to that was in private dental practice for 17 years.
