PROGRAM OVERVIEW

An opportunity offered by the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, MedQUEST is the summer program of choice for secondary school students interested in medicine, nursing and the multitude of exciting allied health professions.

  • MedQUEST is a five-day (Monday to Friday), non-residential health career exploration program for Southwestern Ontario secondary school students, currently enrolled in grade 10 or grade 11, that is offered in partnering communities during the month of July.
  • Each community site may accommodate up to 30 students.
  • Admission is based on a first-come, first-served (complete) basis. Applications are not considered complete without up to date vaccinations and a negative 2-step Mantoux TB Skin Test.

Your vaccinations must be up to date, and you must have the
results of your 2-Step Mantoux Tuberculosis Test before
your application will be considered complete!


How do you apply to MedQUEST? Who is accepted to the program?

  • Applications are completed online by the parent/guardian. Required information includes your personal information, parental consent, code of conduct and proof of up-to-date immunization (including two-step TB skin testing).
    • The process has been streamlined for this year. You will no longer be required to fill out a separate application for the parent and the student.
    • Supporting secondary school documentation is no longer required.
  • You must be currently in grade 10 or 11, and be a permanent resident of Chatham-Kent, Elgin, Essex, Grey, Bruce, Oxford, Middlesex, Sarnia-Lambton, Huron and Perth.
  • Each program site may have up to 30 placements available.
  • Acceptance is based on  first come-first serve basis for all complete online applications. SWOMEN reserves the right to ensure equitable representation of applicants across the region.
  • Students accepted for the program will be notified MARCH 30th. Remaining applicants, with complete standing, will be placed on a wait list.
  • There is a $200 administrative fee to attend MedQUEST. Payment will be accepted online, within 2 weeks of receipt of notification of acceptance.
  • Transportation is required to MedQUEST Health Career Exploration Camp, as well as job placement locations. Program runs MONDAY to FRIDAY, typically from 8:30 to 4:30.

Applying Online to the MedQUEST Health Career Exploration Program

The process has been streamlined for this year. You will no longer be required to fill out a separate application for the parent and the student. Simply follow the steps outlined below:

  • The parent or guardian must complete the High School Student Application Form. The confirmation email will be sent to the email address you provide.
  • The application form will require
    • contact information
      • parent/guardian
      • student applying to MedQUEST
      • high school
      • emergency contact info
    • t-shirt size (all participants will receive a MedQUEST shirt)
    • vaccination information, including
      • date of last vaccinations
      • date and results of each part of the 2-part Mantoux TB Skin Test.
      • proof of the above will be submitted upon acceptance to the Program, and must correspond exactly with the information entered on the application form
    • acceptance of "code of conduct" and affirmation of parental consent to participate
  • We will contact you via email if you are accepted to the Program. Please check your email settings, spam- or spyware-blocking software, or any other technologies used in your household, that may potentially block our messages. If possible, add the following domains to your "safe senders" list:

  • A confirmation is sent automatically upon submission of your electronic application. If you do not receive one via email within an hour of your submission, please contact Kathy Van Dinther.

What does Proof of up-to-date immunization (including two-step TB skin testing) involve?

  • Applicant's vaccinations MUST be up-to-date as part of the MedQUEST online application process.
  • Further, the applicant must state and provide proof of 2-step (Mantoux) Tuberculosis Status.  This test can be arranged through your family doctor or your local health unit.
  • The online application will ask for the following information:
    • Last tetanus booster (date)
    • 2-step Mantoux (TB status):
      • 1st date and results
      • 2nd date and results
  • Current, up-to-date immunization as well as TB testing is compulsory component of the MedQUEST program, and is required so that participants may have access to patient care areas on job placement experiences.
  • Please provide enough time in your application process to complete immunization requirements on time. 

 

Your application cannot be submitted without including the information about immunization. Dates and results must match exactly when proof is submitted after acceptance to the program.
 

 

 

 

 

 

IMPORTANT:

Your application is NOT considered complete UNLESS "Proof of up-to-date immunization" results are included on the application.

 

Please make sure that all required immunization information  (as indicated to the left) is included in the Application.
