Welcome Dr. Simone Illman

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Simone Illman has joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as an Assistant Professor and Pathologist effective October 2022. Simone was born and raised in a small town in the state of Bahia, Brazil. With the goal of pursuing better educational opportunities, she spent her first year of high school in a boarding school in Brazil and, her last year of high school as an exchange student in Bastrop, Texas, USA. Simone subsequently received her medical degree from Rio de Janeiro State University and underwent an Anatomic Pathology Residency at the National Institute of Cancer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During her educational journey, she visited the Mayo Clinic and John Hopkins University as a medical student. She later joined the Mayo Clinic as a Research Fellow, then as a Resident in the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology program, and finally as a Cytopathology and Molecular Pathology Fellow. Simone’s research activities include clinically-oriented collaborative research related to cytopathology, molecular pathology and surgical pathology.
