Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Abroad

With many active international partnerships and research collaborations, the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry’s representatives are abroad at any given time of the year. Official delegations from the School travel to specific countries and institutions to expand partnerships, develop new connections, reconnect with alumni or establish international research centers.

    November 2017, China

    A delegation from Schulich Medicine & Dentistry is with Premier Kathleen Wynne in Nanjing, China this week as part of a Business Mission with Ontario's Ministry of International Trade.

    September 2017, Saudi Arabia

    Dr. Michael Strong, Dean, Dwayne Martins, COO, Dr. Abdel Rahman-Lawendy, Associate Professor/Geographic Leader, Middle East, Dr. Gary Tithecott, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education and Ms. Silke Klenk, Director, Internationalization traveled to Medina, Saudi Arabia to meet and discuss possible linkages with leaders at Al-Rayan Medical Colleges.

    February 2017, Peru

    Dr. Bertha Garcia, Vice Dean Education and Ms. Silke Klenk, Director, Internationalization traveled to Lima for meetings at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and Universidad Cientifica del Sur to discuss a variety of partnership opportunities related to medical education.

    April 2016, China

    Drs. Michael Strong, Bertha Garcia and Doug Jones attended at West China Hospital in Chengdu, at Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, and at Soochow University in Suzhou, China. The delegation members, along with Drs. Gary Tithecott and Scott McKay also participated in the 3rd Annual Medical Education Symposium in Nanjing, China.

    Dr. Doug Jones and Silke Klenk attended at Soochow University's Institute of Biological and Medical Sciences (IBMS) in Suzhou, China. They met with Dr. Jianfeng Dai, Dr. Tainqing Peng, Dr. Sidong Xiong and Dr. Jingping Zhang.

    July 2015, China

    On June 29, Dr. John Denstedt represented Schulich Medicine & Dentistry at Second Military Medical University’s (SMMU) 2015 Graduation and Degree-Conferring Ceremony in Shanghai, China. Dr. Denstedt also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of Western University with SMMU.

    April 2015, China

    Seven faculty members traveled to Chengdu, China to take part in the West China-Kilborn Surgical Symposium — a collaborative initiative of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and the West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University. The purpose of the Symposium was to enhance research and education related to multiple surgical subspecialties.

    China, October 2014

    Dr. John Denstedt travelled to Nanjing Medical University in October 2014 to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). As per the MOU, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will provide a three month Visiting Teacher Experience at Schulich for family medicine teachers from NMU, commencing November 1, 2014.

    China, October 2014

    The first few days were spent in Beijing as part of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Ontario Trade Mission to China. While there, Western University’s Vice-President (Research), Dr. John Capone, signed a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding between Western, Hebei University in Baoding and the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which is rated number one in China.

    China, September 2014

    I was invited to China by the Chinese Hypertension League to facilitate the development of a needs assessment to determine how to improve blood pressure levels in China towards Canada's world-leading levels. This role was based on my experiences leading the Canadian Hypertension Education Program, an initiative first developed out of Robarts.

    Brazil, July-August 2014

    Drs. John Denstedt and Doug Jones visited several Brazilian universities to explore further collaboration and partnerships. Specifically, they visited the Pontifica Universidade Catolica de Minas Gerais (PUC Minas) in Belo Horizonte, PUC Minas Medical School and the University of Sao Paulo.

    Japan, June - July, 2014

    In June and July, I did a two and a half week trip speaking at multiple institutions in Japan. I was invited by CIHR and the three Japanese societies to speak at the Canada-Japan Symposium as part of their annual meeting in the massive Kyoto Convention Centre.

    China, April 2014

    Drs. Michael Strong, John Denstedt, Doug Jones, Jane Rylett, Michael Rieder and Qingping Feng were invited to Chengdu, Huai’an and Nanjing in the spring of 2014. Dr. Michael Strong visited the newly constructed ER & Out-patient Clinic Facility, PET-CT and new Internal Medicine Building in Huai’an and attended the opening ceremony of the Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of Neurological Diseases Symposium. He also lectured at the Western University-Nanjing Medical University Research Symposium.

    Rwanda, March 2014

    Drs. Michael Strong and John Denstedt were been invited to Rwanda in support of the collaborative project: “Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in Rwanda” a project of Western University, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. The School of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry liaison in Rwanda is David Cechetto.
