Dr. Saman Maleki named Researcher of the Year

The Centre for Translational Cancer Research would like to congratulate Dr. Saman Maleki on being awarded the 2024 Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Dean’s Award of Excellence – Researcher of the Year.

Dr. Maleki joined Western University in 2019 and is an assistant professor in the Departments of Oncology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Medical Biophysics. Since arriving in London, Saman has conducted one of the first human trials on patients with advanced melanoma, established LHSC’s first stool biobank where samples of both cancer patients and healthy individuals are collected, and has received several grants including Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), Canadian Cancer Society Impact Grant, Hecht Foundation, Weston Family Foundation, Western ICI, and LHSC ‘s Catalyst Grant.

Dr. Maleki is currently conducting several translational research trials with colleagues from the London Regional Cancer Program, Queen’s University and the Université de Montréal. In 2023, Saman was named one of only seven Londoners to receive the Investigator Award from the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) for his out-of-the-box thinking and visionary approach to cancer treatment using fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT).

Dr. Maleki is already a sough-after speaker and recognized as an international expert in his field and last year received a $1 Million donation from London’s Spriet Family to support his research. Saman is only one of two Canadians to be selected as a Society of Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) Sparkathon awardee and now sits as a representative member on the SITC Board of Directors.
