Announcement: Dr. William McCauley appointed as Associate Dean, Continuing Professional Development and Faculty Development

Image of Dr. Bill McCauleyWe are pleased to announce that Dr. William (Bill) McCauley has been appointed as the Associate Dean, Continuing Professional Development and Faculty Development, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective November 1, 2022, to October 31, 2027.

Dr. McCauley graduated cum laude from the Doctor of Medicine program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in 1987. He obtained specialty certification in Emergency Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1991 and obtained a Master of Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1999. He is currently an Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and practices urgent and emergency medicine in London.

Dr. McCauley has held several administrative positions including Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director (1996 – 2004) and Medical Advisor in Practice Assessment and Enhancement at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (2004 – 2019). He is currently appointed as the Assistant Dean, Professional Affairs. Responsibility for the professional affairs portfolio will be assumed by Dr. Andrea Lum, Vice Dean, Clinical Affairs.

Building on the work from his Master’s thesis, Dr. McCauley’s work at the CPSO involved assisting physicians to incorporate change into their practice in an evidence-informed manner. Since March 2020, Dr. McCauley has served as Assistant Dean, Professional Affairs at Schulich and has actively been involved in providing Faculty Development on the promotions process, as well as workshops on professionalism to Schulich Faculty in London, Windsor and Distributed Education.

Dr. McCauley has worked with many national and international organizations with an interest in assessing physicians’ practice, continuing professional development and changing practice patterns. These organizations include the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada, and the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities.

He served on the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) for eight years, contributed to the development of new Common Standards of Accreditation and participated in site surveys of five different Academic CPD offices across Canada. He continues to practice Urgent and Emergency Medicine in London, Ontario.
