Awards: Western announces Distinguished University Professors and Faculty Scholars

Congratulations to Dale Laird, PhD, Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology, on being named a 2018 Distinguished University Professor by Western University.

The Distinguished University Professorship Award acknowledges sustained excellence in scholarship over a substantial career at Western. The Award includes a citation, the right to use the title, an opportunity for a public lecture and a $10,000 prize to be used for scholarly activity at any time.

Laird is leading world expert in the area of cell communication mediated through gap junction proteins called connexins and pannexins. He is considered to be one of, if not the top active research and key opinion leader internationally in this field. His work has influenced multiple fields that include cell biology, biochemistry, cancer, and development. With more than 150 peer-reviewed publications to date, the scope of Laird’s scientific impact is remarkable.

Congratulations also to the four Schulich Medicine & Dentistry faculty members named 2018 Faculty Scholars by Western:

Qingping Feng, PhD, Physiology and Pharmacology
Lauren Flynn, PhD, Anatomy & Cell Biology (joint appointment with Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering)
Steven Laviolette, PhD, Anatomy & Cell Biology
Dr. Walter Siqueira, DDS, PhD, Biochemistry, Dentistry

This honour recognizes the significant achievements that Flynn, Feng, Laviolette, and Siqueira have made in teaching and research. These faculty members are considered all-around scholars and will hold the title of Faculty Scholar for two years.
