Announcement: Dr. Stephen Wetmore re-appointed Chair/Chief, Department of Family Medicine

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Wetmore has been re-appointed as Chair/Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre & St. Joseph's Health Care London effective February 1, 2017 to January 31, 2022.

Dr. Wetmore earned his BSc, and Msc, in Biochemistry from the University of Toronto and Dalhousie University, respectively. He completed his MD, from the University of Toronto in 1975 and his Master’s in Clinical Science, (FM), at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 1999.

Dr. Wetmore joined Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 1993 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and in 2009, he was appointed as a Professor.

Dr. Wetmore’s research speciality is in primary and patient centred care, and procedure skills in family medicine. His research has been funded by CIHR, the Department of Family Medicine Research Trust Fund and the Lawson Health Research Institute. He has been teaching and modelling comprehensive family medicine to medical students and family medicine residents in London for more than 18 years.

Dr. Wetmore serves on a number of department, hospital, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, and professional committees and was the Chair of the Working Group on Procedural Skills in The College of Family Physicians of Canada from 2002-2006. In 2008, he served as President of the Ontario College of Family Physicians and from 2009 – 2010, he was Chair of the Opioid Public Policy Project – Working Group on Education in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Dr. Wetmore has received a number of teaching awards and was the recipient of the Dr. Ian McWhinney Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching in 1994, 1998 and 2003. He was named to the University Student Council Honour Role at Western University in 2003, received the Canadian Association of Medical Educators Award of Merit in 2004 and received the 2005 Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Graduate/Postgraduate Award of Excellence in Education in 2005.
