Dr. Francisco Olea-Popelka is the Beryl Ivey Endowed Chair in One Health. During his career as a veterinary epidemiologist, he has focused his efforts in addressing health challenges at the interface of domestic animals, wildlife species, and humans in different environments locally, nationally, and globally. To accomplish his professional goals, he closely collaborates with colleagues in different fields including physicians, nurses, nutritionists, veterinarians, laboratory technicians, social workers, ecologists, nutritionists, government officials, journalists, and economists, amongst others. His main area of interest is mycobacterial infections and tuberculosis (TB) at the intersection of livestock, wildlife species, and humans (zoonotic TB) at a global scale; he is recognized as an international leader in zoonotic TB. Additionally, he works in topics related to wildlife conservation and management.

“In our research group, with our applied research approach, we constantly seek to generate and provide scientific evidence to guide the decision/policy making process impacting the health of humans, wildlife and domestic species, and the environment in which these species interact,” said Dr. Olea-Popelka.
