This stream tackles how casualties are moved, treated at scale, and supported, spanning aeromedical evacuation, forward transport under threat, and the training systems that prepare teams for mass casualty and dispersed care.

Aviation Medicine and Aeromedical Evacuation

London International Airport, civilian air capability, Western's Commercial Aviation Management program, and Western's clinical expertise create an opportunity to build programs in aviation medicine and aeromedical evacuation, supporting training, simulation, research, and operational planning relevant to both military and civilian emergencies. Potential areas include flight-line medicine, casualty reception and redistribution, aeromedical evacuation protocols, surge capacity planning, London as a regional or national reception hub for injured personnel, civilian-military cooperation in air evacuation, and transport physiology in trauma and critical care.

Transport for Forward Operations

Future medical care will depend on moving people, equipment, power, blood products, imaging devices, and surgical capability through threatened environments. The Group will encourage collaboration between medicine, engineering, aviation, logistics, and industry, with research priorities including mobile forward surgical platforms, lightweight surgical and resuscitation systems, transport options in contested environments, modular field medical units, power supply for remote medical teams, stealth, survivability, and protection from surveillance, and lessons from historical transport systems in war.

Trauma Systems, Mass Casualty Care, and Remote Training

Western faculty have experience in mass casualty training, simulation, and team-based education. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated remote education and distributed training methods, highly relevant to military medical preparedness. This stream will support mass casualty simulation, remote and hybrid training platforms, team training for dispersed care, military-civilian trauma system integration, prolonged casualty care protocols, training for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, medics, and allied health personnel, and rapid remanning and replacement training during high-casualty events
