ETHICAL ISSUES AT END OF LIFE, INCLUDING ASSISTED SUICIDE AND EUTHANASIA

Biography:
Since 2010, Marleen Van Laethem has been the Clinical Ethicist at St. Joseph’s Health Care London, covering all sites.
She’s been working in ethics for more than 20 years, previously at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and prior to that, at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto. At that time, she worked extensively in research ethics. Marleen’s Master of Health Science degree is in Bioethics from University of Toronto. Her Bachelor of Science degree is in Biology, from McMaster University. Since spring of 2021, she is also an Adjunct Professor at Saint Paul University in Ottawa.

Learning Objectives:

1.     Refresher on healthcare ethics and frameworks.
2.     Various perspectives on the legalization of assisted suicide and euthanasia.
3.     Responding to requests for medical assistance in dying.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IN DYING – C14 TO C7

Biography:
Is the Lead, MAID Access for Home and Community Care Support Services South West, and a MAID assessor and provider. Julie holds undergraduate degrees in Health Sciences, Business and Nursing and Master Degrees in Business and Nursing. Prior to her work with MAID she worked as a nurse practitioner in primary care, addictions and mental health. She is a Board Member of the Canadian Association of MAID Assessors and Providers, an executive member of the CAMAP National MAID Curriculum Committee, a member of the Dying with Dignity Clinical Advisory Committee and presented at both the Senate of Canada and House of Commons during the development of Bill C7 and Bill C14.

Learning Objectives:
1.      Be aware of the current initiatives to prepare for the removal of the sunset clause excluding mental illness as an illness,              disease or disability for the purposes of assessing eligibility for persons requesting medical assistance in dying.
2.      Understand the anticipated barriers to access for patients who may request medical assistance in dying.
3.      Appreciate the opportunities for engagement and integration in our region with respect to medical assistance in dying.​
