It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Margot R. Roach, a distinguished figure in the field of Medical Biophysics at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.

Dr. Roach's journey came to a close on August 24, 2023, at the age of 88, while under the care of Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro, Nova Scotia.

Dr. Roach's legacy is one of groundbreaking achievements and accomplishments. Not only did she serve as a past Chair of our Department, but she also holds the remarkable distinction of being the first female Chair of a Department of Biophysics in Canada.

Her international recognition as a researcher and educator was underscored by an array of prestigious awards, including the Class of '62 Award for medical teaching, the Young Investigator Award from the American College of Cardiology, the "Women of Distinction" title from the City of London (YMCA), the Dean’s Award of Excellence from the School of Medicine at Western, and the Arthur C. Guyton Award for Cardiovascular Physiology from the American Physiological Society. She also received an honorary DSc from the University of New Brunswick.

The establishment of the Dr. Margot R. Roach Scholarship in Medicine at the University of New Brunswick stands as a testament to her dedication to fostering excellence in the next generation of scholars.

Dr. Roach was clearly a pioneer in academia in many ways, and we mourn her passing.

Western University will lower it's flag on Wednesday, August 30th in Memory of Dr. Roach, who retired from the Department of Medical Biophysics in 1997 after 30 years of service.
