Graduate Milestone Requirement: Responsible Research & Inclusive Training

  • Graduate Program Milestone Requirement: Introduction to Biomedical Sciences

    As a new graduate student in a research-based program, you are required to complete online modules designed to support your academic success and to meet Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry expectations for responsible and inclusive research. Completion of the two online modules, which comprise the milestone, is mandatory to maintain good academic standing in your program and is a requirement for graduation.

    Overview of Milestone:

    The mandatory Introduction to Biomedical Sciences milestone includes two online training modules; the first is on responsible conduct of research, and the second is on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

    Launch Date: September 15, 2025

    Completion Deadline: January 3, 2026

    Format: Online (Brightspace and CITI course)

    Access: All incoming students in research-based graduate programs will be granted access to milestone content and instructions via Brightspace

    Completion Requirement: Both modules are mandatory and must be completed by the deadline. For Module 1, students must obtain a Completion Certificate through the CITI course and upload it to Brightspace to get credit for completion. For Module 2, all content is completed within Brightspace.

    Failure to complete the milestone, which includes the two modules, by the deadline will result in an “Incomplete” on your transcript and may impact your academic progression and WGRS.  Details for each module are provided below.

      

    Module 1 – Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training

     

    Opens: September 15, 2025

    Deadline: January 3, 2026

    Platform: CITI – Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative and Brightspace

    Instructions:

    1. Go to the CITI Program registration page:

    https://www.citiprogram.org/index.cfm?pageID=14&languagePreference=English&region=1

    2. Click “Register” to create your account

    3. Type “University of Western Ontario (N2)” into the “Select Your Organization Affiliation” box.

    4. Choose the following course:

         Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) – Life Science – Canada

    5. Complete the course and download your Completion Certificate by clicking “View/Print”.

    6. Upload your Completion Certificate to the Assignment in Brightspace to receive credit for Module 1 of the

    Introduction to Biomedical Sciences milestone.

    Module 2 – Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Training

    Opens: Mid-October 2025

    Deadline: January 3, 2026

    Platform: Brightspace

    Content: CR(EDI)T training focused on fostering equitable, diverse, and inclusive research environments

    Instructions: Complete all assigned content within the module by the deadline to receive credit for Module 2 of the Introduction to Biomedical Sciences milestone.
