4th Annual Paediatric Surgery Research Day

The fourth annual Paediatric Surgery Research Day was held on Monday, April 1st, 2019 at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre in London, Ontario. The event was well attended and comprised of 35 participants, including, paediatric surgeons, paediatric specialists, residents, medical students, and research staff.

The program encompassed research presentations in many areas of paediatric surgery, including; general surgery, otolaryngology, urology, and anesthesia. The research presentations were well received by the audience and there was meaningful conversation around the research presented.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Trey Coffey is a paediatrician at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Coffey is also the Associate Clinical Director of Children’s Hospitals Solutions for Patient Safety. She provided an outstanding presentation around quality and safety initiatives, including, the National Surgical Quality Improvement Pediatric Program (NSQIP) and Solution for Patient Safety. Dr. Trey provided first-hand experience with implementing safety strategies (SickKid’s Caring Safely Program) and the current quality and safety initiatives bringing together surgical programs in children’s hospitals. The discussion period generated some excellent ideas for initiatives between surgical subspecialties and other children’s hospitals across Ontario.
