The staff of the Medical Genetics Program of Southwestern Ontario consists of six Medical Geneticists (Dr. Maha Saleh, Dr. Victoria Siu, Dr. Chitra Prasad, Dr. Angelica Moresco, Dr. Tugce Bacli and Dr. Natalya Karp) along with  ten genetic counsellors. There may be an obstetrical or paediatric resident, and/or a clinical clerk. There are approx. 4,000 patients or families seen annually mainly on a referral basis from family physicians, obstetricians and paediatricians. About one third are referrals for prenatal patients wishing counselling and invasive prenatal cytogenetic and molecular diagnosis. The remaining referrals are regarding general genetic issues including a balance of single gene diseases, chromosomal disorders, multifactorial conditions, some types of cancer and dysmorphology consults. A resident spending time on this service is involved with as many patients and families as time permits. Selected patients and families are discussed on Fridays at a general meeting attended by various professionals providing genetic services in London. There will be an opportunity to see patients - inpatients and outpatient  (both in person and virtual) as well as to examine people of all ages.

There is a comprehensive pre-clinic meeting held Wednesday mornings where patients are discussed/reviewed and a plan of action established. Residents wishing to participate in Metabolic Clinic are expected to attend the pre-clinic review. There is a weekly Metabolic Clinic which is generally held on Wednesday. A Neuro-Metobolic Clinic is held one Thursday per month. Patients seen here are investigated and followed for rare inborn errors of metabolism.

On-Call: Although this rotation is intensive and covers a wide range of common and rare genetic problems, there is no on-call schedule and weekends will be free unless there is an emergency inpatient consultation.Other: Family Medicine residents planning a practice involving obstetrics, neonatal, and prenatal care, will find this elective particularly helpful.

Scheduling: Can take 1 resident/block.
