Flu in our community – Masks now to be worn

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

The Middlesex-London Health Unit and our Hospitals have now declared that influenza is circulating in our community. This includes London, St. Thomas and surrounding area.

It is now mandatory that all non-vaccinated personnel (staff, physicians, clerks, residents), and visitors wear a mask when within two metres of patients. This is in accordance with hospital influenza vaccination policies.

This means if you haven't received a vaccination in the past 14 days, you must wear a mask when you are in contact with a patient, as well as when you are in a common areas such as cafeterias, entrances, or hallways.

Evidence shows wearing a mask can help prevent the spread of influenza by decreasing transmission from non-vaccinated individuals, who could be infected but symptom free, to others.

If you haven't received your flu shot, you can contact Student Health Services. To learn more visit: health.uwo.ca/services/students/encyclopedia/vaccinations.html
