Congratulations Kevin Dueck, Meds 2016, on placing third at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNM) Medical Narrative and Poetry Contest for his submission The Crying Doctor.
After seeing the UNM Medical Narrative Competition advertised on the YouME Blog, Kevin decided to submit a narrative piece inspired by an experience during Discovery Week. Kevin's piece outlines an interaction he had with a physician - "Dr. S" - whom he was shadowing in a rural hospital.
In the narrative piece, Dr. S shares with Kevin an emotional story about his colleague trying to find balance between work and family, and the impact of his long hours on his young daughter.
"I thought it was an important lesson in work-life balance and found it quite moving. Others I told the story to also had strong reactions and I felt I should write it up and submit it to the contest," Kevin explained.
Kevin's winning piece will be published this fall in the UNM Medical Muse journal.
