Available to second year medical students pursuing family medicine as a career:
The Family Medicine Sponsorship Program is a new program developed by the Department of Health and Wellness in year 2013. The program will provide funding for three medical students per year for a five year pilot period. The funds will be paid directly to the students in the form of a stipend to assist with their medical education expenses.
Successful applicants will receive the following funds to help offset the cost of their education expenses:
- $10,000 signing bonus at the end of their second year of medical school
- $40,000 stipend during 3rd year of Medical School
- $40,000 stipend during 4th year of Medical School
- $10,000 stipend during 1st year of Residency Training
- $10,000 stipend during 2nd year of Residency Training
These stipends are based on the average cost of tuition, fees and living expenses at Canadian medical schools. The commitment required by the successful candidates will be to sign a contract for a five-year Return-in-Service commitment. The area that will be assigned will be the location in the greatest need as identified by the province at the time the physician enters the health system. The first group of students will enter the system in 2017.
