Health Canada has asked Novartis, manufacturer of two of the seasonal influenza vaccine brands Agriflu and Fluad, to voluntarily suspend distribution of these vaccines in Canada. This action is a precautionary measure. The vaccines have not been recalled. As a best practice at LHSC, vaccines are routinely examined for particulate matter before they are administered at our hospital. There have been no reports of protein clumping or white floating material in vaccine administered at LHSC or in Canada.
LHSC's seasonal flu campaign will continue, using a vaccine from a different manufacturer. There is a good supply of flu vaccines from alternate companies and staff should continue to protect themselves against influenza by getting vaccinated.
