CIHR funding boost helps answer challenging questions that could save lives

Congratulations to all of the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry researchers who – combined – received more than $7 million in funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Spring competition.
The results from the Spring 2024 competition represent an 80-per-cent increase in the number of submissions compared to Spring 2023, and the second consecutive competition with a significant increase in applications, said Robert Bartha, PhD, Vice Dean of Research & Innovation.
In particular, we would like to acknowledge Dr. Fred Dick, whose project "Understanding pattern recognition receptor signaling in homeostasis and cancer" received $1 Million in Project Grant funding. Dr. Xiao Zhen Zhou was also successful as a co-applicant on Dr. Kun Ping Lu’s project grant "Identification of Novel Disease Drivers, Therapeutic Targets, and Biomarkers of Sepsis."
Furthermore, we congratulate Dr. Saman Maleki, co-Principal Investigator with Dr. Mark Basik from Jewish General Hospital/McGill University, on their CIHR-funded project "Altering the gut microbiome in Triple-negative breast cancer: a pilot study." This project was awarded $1.5 Million and will be the first neoadjuvant fecal matter transplant trial in the world.
