Vanessa DeMelo, Medicine Class of 2017

Why medicine? And why Schulich Medicine?
I chose to study medicine as a means to directly apply scientific knowledge, especially that regarding the body, to problem solving and hopefully meaningful interpersonal interactions.

Why Schulich Medicine?
I chose Schulich Medicine because of its stellar educational program, clinical experiences and because I bleed purple. I’m also a Londoner (and my mom will bring me food every once in a while!).

What do you like most about your experience so far at Schulich Medicine?
I most like the experiences I've had that make me feel especially at home here- faculty who love to teach and want us to learn, staff who enable us to be our best, and an extremely supportive class to learn and do fun things with!

What are your career aspirations in medicine?
Pondering something surgical, specifically ENT (otolaryngology).

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
To understand and speak every language.

Ranbir Verraich, Medicine Class of 2018

Why medicine?
There were a lot of different factors which led me to making the decision to study medicine. I believe the variety in medicine was something that initially attracted me to this field. Having the ability to choose the type of doctor I could be was very appealing. Being at the frontline of care was something that also appealed to me in this discipline. I personally considered other fields and they were all interesting, such as research or dentistry, however, I just could not see myself doing that for the rest of my life. Having the personal interaction along with the ability to address a variety of situations was important to me in making this decision. There was a plethora of factors I considered and I believe that this is a very personal decision that each candidate should reflect upon.

Why Schulich Medicine?
Schulich Medicine for me was a no-brainer. Through talking to previous graduates about their experience, it was the obvious choice. The variety of groups and programs available to students to enhance their learning experience was crucial. Not only do we receive a great education, but we have an enjoyable time while learning.

What do you like most about your experience so far at Schulich Medicine?
So far I think the support and camaraderie between students within my class and students in upper years has been overwhelming. I found that all of the students I have approached are very welcoming and helpful regardless of having met them before or not. This support leads to a great environment and encourages “togetherness” as a school.

What are your career aspirations in medicine?
I am currently unsure as to what I want to do. Observerships have given me a better idea of what I enjoy so far.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
My superpower would be the ability to time travel. How cool would it be to travel back in time and meet Theodore Roosevelt, Terry Fox or Tupac?
