Thursday, December 18, 2014

The History of Medicine Days is an annual two-day, nation-wide conference held at the University of Calgary. The 2015 Conference is being held on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7.

Undergraduates and graduate students from across Canada and the United States are invited to submit an abstract for an oral or a poster presentation on the history of medicine and health care. The presentations will be 10 to 12 minutes for oral or two to three minutes for a poster (with additional discussion time afterwards). The poster display will be up for the duration of the conference.

The possible topics for presentation cover a wide range, including areas such as the Classics, the History of Public Health, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Human Biology and Neuroscience.
Prizes will be awarded in different categories and all are invited to attend the Awards Banquet on the last evening of the conference.

Each student must present an original historical research attempt with new methodological perspectives on the topic and/or have a critical discussion following the presentation.

The Conference’s keynote speaker is Dr. Peter L. Twohig, Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Studies at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts (St. Mary’s University, Halifax, NS, Canada). His presentation is entitled: “How Mental Health Facilities Met Their Staffing Needs in an Era of Expanding and Changing Services”.
