The William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition, sponsored by the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), is open to medical students attending schools of medicine or osteopathy in the United States and Canada.
Each year hundreds of entries are submitted to the competition and go through a preliminary screening by the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University, and final judging will be by Richard M. Berlin, M.D., psychiatrist and poet from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
The first-, second-, and third-place winners will be invited to read their poetry at an awards ceremony at NEOMED. In addition, the editors of the Journal of Medical Humanities review the winning poems and consider them for possible publication in that journal.
The entry deadline for the competition is December 31, 2014. Click here for additional information about the guidelines and rules for submissions.
The top three poets will be awarded $300, $200, and $100 respectively and will be invited to visit NEOMED on Mar. 27, 2015 to read their poems. Travel expenses will be paid by the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Winning poems will be announced by Mar. 20, 2015.
