Applications for Winter Awards (Jan - Mar)

 The following awards are now available for application. Please read each application carefully as individual criteria and requirements vary for each award. Although award sums were confirmed at the time of posting, they are subject to change. 

Please Note:

  • This is a list of awards that require application submission by the winter deadline. For a complete list of available awards, please see the Registrar's website. 
  • Award funds are first applied to outstanding tuition, and credit balances/adjustments are sent out from the Registrar's Office.
  • Due to the high volume of applications, only those selected for an award will be notified via email at the end of March/early April. 

 

SELF APPLICATION: ANY YEAR

Rowntree Prize in Medical History 

Awarded annually to a student in any year from the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry for his or her work in medical history, which will be evaluated for its historical content, style, accuracy and originality. To be considered, work may be submitted to the History of Medicine Office on, or before March 15th as an essay or in a presentation format. Submission details are available on the History of Medicine Office website.The recipient will be selected by the History of Medicine Office with the approval of the Progression & Awards Committee. This award was established in memory of the late Dr. L. G. Rowntree (M.D 1905) Gold Medalist.

Dr. Greta Toni Swart Essay Award in Intellectual /Developmental Disabilities

Awarded to a full-time student in any year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with demonstrated academic achievement and who submits an essay describing an experience managing a patient at any stage in the lifespan with a developmental disability.  This includes management of physical health, mental health or both, either in the hospital system or in the community, including family medicine. Interested students are asked to submit a 1,500 to 2,000 word essay detailing their experience by March 31st. A Committee in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will select the recipient.

W.H. McGuffin Scholarships in Radiology

Awarded to students in any year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry based on academic achievement in Diagnostic Radiology or Nuclear Medicine. Preference will be given to candidates who have had an article accepted for publication within the last year on a subject pertaining to Diagnostic Radiology or Nuclear Medicine. An online application as well as a copy of the article must be submitted to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by Mar 1. A committee within the School of Medicine will select the recipient.

Shri Asuri Bhashyam and Mani Bhashyam Award in Medicine

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry based on academic achievement. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Black; who are Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis); or self-identify as a racialized person of colour. An online application must be submitted to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by March 1st.  The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will select the recipients at the end of each academic year.

Dr. Joceyln and Michael Charles Award in Medicine

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry based on academic achievement. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Black. If a student who self-identifies as Black does not qualify, then students from any equity deserving group will be eligible. An online application must be submitted to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by March 1st.  The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will select the recipients at the end of each academic year.

Dr. Nancy Naylor Award

Awarded annually to a student in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program based on academic achievement. Preference will be given to an Indigenous student (First Nations, Inuit or Métis). An online application must be submitted to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by March 1st.  The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will select the recipient at the end of each academic year.

PEER NOMINATION: ANY YEAR

Meds Class of 2008 Leadership Award

Awarded annually to a full-time student in Year 1, 2 or 3 of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and collaboration skills either within their class or the greater Schulich community. In order to be considered for this award students must be nominated by either their peers and/or faculty. An Online Nomination Form must be submitted to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by March 1st. The Undergraduate Medical Education Awards Committee will select the recipient each year from the list of nominations received. This award was established by a generous gift from the Meds Class of 2008.

William Jeffery Scholarship

Awarded to a student in any year from the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry based on academic achievement and service to a community outside of Schulich. Online nomination forms must be received by the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by March 1st. The recipient will be selected by the Progression and Awards Committee. This scholarship was established through Foundation Western by Alan Thicke (BA ‘67) in honour of his father, William Jeffery.

SELF APPLICATION: YEAR 2 (Windsor Meds2028)

Hotel Dieu 1888 Presidents Legacy Award

Awarded annually to a full-time student in Year 2 of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Windsor Campus, based on demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and volunteer involvement in the community. Candidates are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office outlining their community involvement, along with a letter of reference from a community representative by March 1st. The recipient will be selected by the Associate Dean, Windsor Campus with the approval of the Undergraduate Medical Education Awards Committee. This award was established by the Professional Medical Staff Association of the former Hôtel Dieu Grace Hospital in Windsor, ON.

SELF APPLICATION: YEAR 4 (Meds 2026)

Dr. M. Ian Bowmer Award for Leadership in Social Accountability

The Dr. M. Ian Bowmer Award is awarded annually to one medical student and one resident who have demonstrated leadership in social accountability within the schools of medicine in Canada. Each recipient will be awarded $5,000 to be used for studies, books, or e-learning tools, and/or conference attendance. The Dr. M. Ian Bowmer Award for Leadership in Social Accountability was named in recognition of Dr. Bowmer’s many years of service as the executive director and registrar. Applicants are asked to submit an online application to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by March 1st.
