MEDICI Centre designated as World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Global Surgery, Anesthesia & Perioperative Care

The MEDICI Centre has been designated as World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Global Surgery, Anesthesia & Perioperative Care. The MEDICI Centre will be one of 28 Canadian Centres, and first in the world designated by the WHO to study perioperative and surgical care. The WHO designates institutions to conduct activities and research in support of WHO programs. The 68th World Health Assembly passed Resolution 68.15, “Strengthening of Emergency and Essential Surgical Care and Anesthesia as a component of Universal Health Coverage” in 2016. This Resolution recognizes access to safe and essential surgical care as key components of Universal Health Care, recognizing that 5 billion people around the world do not have access to life-saving surgery. With this designation, MEDICI will lead evidence synthesis and knowledge translation to support decision and policy making in developing in developed countries pertaining to surgery, anesthesia and perioperative care.
