Dr. Eric Arts appointed as Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Eric Arts has been appointed as Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective from June 1, 2014 to June 30, 2019.

Dr. Arts graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science from Western University in 1990 and then received his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from McGill University in 1994 under the supervision of Dr. Mark A. Wainberg. Following post-doctoral training in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Cleveland, Ohio he joined the Division of Infectious Diseases at CWRU as an Assistant Professor in 1997 and became a full Professor in 2009. Dr. Arts' previous administrative experience includes Director of the Evolution in Medicine Program for CWRU (2010-2014), Director, CWRU Centre for AIDS Research (CFAR) Uganda Laboratories (2002-present), Sub-Program Director, Cancer Virology, CWRU Comprehensive Cancer Centre (2004-2006), and Director of Development, Centre for AIDS Research, CWRU (1998-2002).

Dr. Arts is an internationally renowned scholar with career accomplishments encompassing more than 110 publications and book chapters as well as several patents and licensing agreements with industry. He has provided over 100 invited lectures at university, institutes, and conferences around the world. Dr. Arts has served on numerous peer review committees and scientific advisory boards including the CIHR, NIH, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

Dr. Arts was the recipient of the Mark Wainberg Plenary Speaker; Canadian AIDS and HIV Research Association (2002) and the NorTech Innovation Award for "Biotech Platform for Diagnosis, Monitoring and Drug Development" (2009).
