Western University Celebrates Graduation of Canada’s First Orthogeriatric Fellow
Western University is proud to announce the graduation of Dr. Nadeen Al Baz, the first trainee to complete Canada’s inaugural Orthogeriatric Fellowship Program. This milestone marks a significant advancement in specialized geriatric training, reflecting Canada’s growing commitment to interdisciplinary care for older adults with complex musculoskeletal conditions.
Dr. Al Baz, a graduate of Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and trained in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine at Hamad Medical Corporation, relocated to Canada to pursue advanced fellowship training in Orthogeriatrics under the mentorship of Dr. Jenny Thain, Geriatrician and Fellowship Program Director. With the successful completion of her 12-month fellowship, Dr. Al Baz will join the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Western University, where she will continue to develop the Orthogeriatric and 3FM (Falls, Fractures, Frailty, and Mobility) programs.
Launched on July 1, 2024, Western’s Orthogeriatric Fellowship is the first of its kind in Canada, offering focused, post-specialist training for physicians already certified in Geriatric Medicine. The program equips fellows with expertise in the interdisciplinary co-management of older adults with fragility fractures. Training includes acute hip fracture care in orthopedic-geriatric shared models, post-fracture inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient metabolic bone disease management, and comprehensive falls assessment as part of fracture risk reduction.
The fellowship reflects global best practices in orthogeriatric care and positions Western University as a leader in preparing physicians to meet the complex needs of aging populations around the world.
