Improving Care Experiences for Patients, Families and Providers

Dr. Shannon Sibbald leads a dynamic and interdisciplinary health systems research program focused on improving the implementation of integrated care within complex healthcare environments. As an expert in implementation science, her work centers on understanding and evaluating the processes, structures, and outcomes that shape how healthcare teams deliver coordinated, high‑quality care.
Dr. Sibbald’s team uses a rich mix of qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the experiences of patients, families, and healthcare providers. Recent projects include the development of a theoretical framework to guide the implementation of chronic disease management programs in primary care, as well as the validation of a patient‑reported experience measure (PREM) for individuals living with COPD.
Recognizing that illness deeply affects both patients and their families, her team also investigates the lived experiences of people with COPD and their family caregivers. This program of research continues to explore the potential role and value of support groups and other community‑based resources in enhancing quality of life and improving care experiences.
