Urgent Care Medicine

Preceptor Dr. Ryan Arbeau, Postgraduate Coordinator, LHSC & SJHC
Contact person: Susan Pierson

The Urgent Care rotation is now offered under the Division of Emergency Medicine.  The rotation will be comprised of 8 shifts in Urgent Care at SJHC and 4 shifts in the Emergency Department at either Victoria or University Hospital.  This is in order to offer the full breadth of acute care medicine to residents working in the Urgent Care and to allow close comparison to Emergency Medicine.

Each Urgent Care shift will be approximately 8 to 10 hours in duration.  Each ER shift will be approximately 6 to 8 hours in duration.  The hours of the Urgent Care are 8:00am to 6:00pm weekdays and 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekends.  It is expected that residents will stay until all patients have been seen.  The shifts for the attending physicians are generally not matched to the resident shift as they are in the ER.

In Urgent Care, you will see a large number of lacerations, MSSK injuries, eye concerns and pediatric illnesses.  There is an opportunity for practicing skin procedures such as abscess incision and drainage, cyst removal, toenail excision, laceration repairs and simple biopsies.

All residents scheduled for an Urgent Care rotation will be required to attend a mandatory orientation session on the first day of the rotation.

Scheduling:

Can take 3 residents/block.
