Student Health Services

Elective opportunities for final year Family Medicine Residents at Student Health Services, University of Windsor

DESCRIPTION OF ROTATION

The University of Windsor is a medium size university with presently about 16,000 students. Student Health Services (SHS) is a medical office on Campus. It is located on the second floor of the CAW Student Centre.  Its’ mission is to provide quality comprehensive primary health care to all the students in need. There are about 10,000 patient visits per year, depending on physician availability.

The clinic can accommodate 4 FTE physicians.  It has 2 clinical nurses, 1 part time medical secretary, 1 part time medical transcriber, 2 receptionists, a part time consulting psychiatrist, a part time dietitian, a health promotion nurse and a secretary to the Director. Although the focus is on young adult health in their transition years, SHS also serves many returning mature students (about 2,000) and about 2,000 international students from over 50 countries.

The clinic is open September through April from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (closed on Civic holidays and between Christmas and New Year) and May through August from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (closed 12-1 p.m.). Our busiest times are September through mid-December and January through April.

It is an excellent opportunity for a Family Medicine Resident to gain experience/different perspective in adolescent/young adult health.  The most common medical problems seen in our clinic are relating (and not limited ) to respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, nutrition, contraceptive, sexual health, musculoskeletal, travel medicine, mental health, substance use/misuse/abuse, sleep disorders, dermatology, some cardiovascular problems and other medical/emotional problems.

The provision of medical/preventive health care to this age group (bad habits are not fully ingrained), either through individual office visits or through programming by the health promotion nurse can impact positively on the development of healthier life styles/attitudes/good habits for life.  This can be professionally very rewarding.

SHS welcomes any final year Family Medicine Resident for an elective rotation.

Scheduling: Can take 1 resident for 4 week electives; no residents in the summer months (April 30 - Aug 30) or over the winter holiday period (mid Dec – Jan 2nd)
