Palliative Care - London - Parkwood

Contact person: Dr. Anita Singh - Palliative Care, Parkwood Hospital

Assistant:

Pat Gray

The Parkwood Palliative care unit is comprised of a 14 bed in-patient unit. Patients are admitted to this unit directly from the community or transferred from other acute care hospitals for pain and symptom management and/or end of life care.

The family medicine resident will spend 4 weeks at the PCU. The resident works as a full member of the interprofessional team providing care to the patients and families.  The resident assumes responsibility for the admission and daily care of the patient including attendance at team rounds and family meetings. The resident will be expected to attend interdisciplinary rounds on the patients which take place on a weekly basis.

There are 6 attending physicians admitting to the Parkwood palliative care unit. The resident will be assigned one primary preceptor but will have an opportunity to work with all the physicians during the rotations. Formal teaching on pertinent palliative care topics will be provided by self-directed modules that will be reviewed by the attending physicians. Residents will also be expected to attend Pain and Symptom rounds which take place on a weekly basis and may be asked to prepare topics for presentation at these teaching rounds.
The resident is included in the on call schedule for the unit as the first physician to be called with one of the attending from PCU assigned to provide back up.

Scheduling: Can take 1 resident for 4 week electives; no residents in July and August.
