Palliative Care- Kitchener

The Grand River Hospital, St. Mary's General Hospital, and the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre are located in Kitchener- Waterloo, with the latter designated the regional cancer centre for the region of Waterloo-Wellington. These institutions are serviced by our team and deliver full-scope palliative care services, including inpatient consultation, outpatient clinics, community care, as well as inpatient hospice treatment.

Resident(s) will work with the interdisciplinary team to provide palliative care, and pain and symptom control with a wide variety of patients. Residents may have the opportunity to work in more than one sector, to gain broad exposure of the palliative patient experience.

Patients may have a wide variety of diagnoses including:

  • End-stage heart and lung disease
  • Stroke
  • End stage renal failure
  • End Stage liver disease
  • Neurodegenerative conditions
  • Cancer

The emphasis is on patient and family care. There is considerable future care planning and liaison with family physicians and community teams. The residents will work collaboratively with surgical, medical, cardiac and other teams.

Objectives include:

  • Exposure and proficiency in pain and symptom management
  • Improved ability and experience in prognostication
  • Familiarity in conducting family and team meetings
  • Learning how to function and operate within an interdisciplinary team
  • Understand the philosophy and goals and objectives of palliative care, as a discipline

Resident(s) will work with the interdisciplinary team to provide palliative care, and pain and symptom control with a wide scope of patients. Residents will have the opportunity to work in more than one sector, to gain broad exposure of the palliative patient experience.

Scheduling: Can take 3 resident/block.
