The Family Medicine Resident will work with the multi-disciplinary CTU team in hospital to provide care to children admitted to hospital for various common pediatric problems that a Family Physician should have some general knowledge about including bronchiolitis, croup, asthma, gastroenteritis, type 1 diabetes, peri-operative supportive management, child abuse, overdose, sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia.  They will also gain experience in the examination and care of the well newborn as well as common newborn problems.  The Family Medicine Resident will work closely with the consultant Paediatrician and the Paediatric Residents to care for patients and to oversee the clinical clerks.  There are opportunities to take a leadership role when the pediatric residents are not present.   This rotation includes night and weekend call during which time the resident has an opportunity to develop decision making and management skills and work more independently.  The CTU team also sees patients in consultation from the ER, the Maternal/Newborn Clinic and also follow-ups in the pediatric outpatient department for patients discharged from the CTU and patients of the Consultant Paediatrician on service.

This rotation is an excellent opportunity for the Family Medicine Resident to develop their skills in paediatric history and physical exam skill, learn about managing common pediatric problems, newborn care and functioning in a multi-disciplinary team.
