The hospital has approximately 4500 deliveries annually {12-13 every 24 hours on average}. It is a level 3 community hospital with 13 practicing obstetricians and a fetal maternal specialist. This is one of the largest ob/gyn units in Canada. Our population is approx. 80% low risk and 20% high-risk deliveries. We have an NICU that can care for infants greater than 28 weeks and we are within 2 hours of a tertiary care centre in London, where extremely high-risk patients may be transferred. The Cesarean section rate is approx. 17% and the epidural rate is approx. 75%. We offer a single room maternity care model for childbirth.

Residents, on call for 4-6 shifts {24 hour} per month, can expect to actively participate in 10-20 deliveries and actively assist at c/sections. Most of the obstetricians provide opportunities for the residents to spend about 4-5 days/week in their offices, seeing both antenatal and gynecological patients. There are also opportunities to observe circumcisions and assist with gyn surgeries in the OR if interested.

Orientation is provided on the first working day of the rotation. This includes orientation to the childbirth program at the hospital and a brief refresher in fetal health surveillance. Residents should be familiar with neonatal resuscitation. Scheduling is a cooperative effort between you and your colleagues. Holiday time must be declared prior to orientation and only one resident may be off at a time.

Residents will be expected to take call 4 to 6 shifts {24 hour} / month with next day off. This will include at least 1 weekend day. There will be opportunities to attend to High risk Fetal -Maternal clinics in hospital. Accommodation may be arranged with the SWOMEN office.

Scheduling: Can take 2-3 residents/block.
